Lierna is a small municipality located between Mandello del Lario and Varenna, on the eastern shore of Lake Como.

The history of this ancient village starts from the time of the Celts, although the first name given to the town, Hibernia, dates back to Roman times. The moment of greatest development of the city came during the Middle Ages and in fact even today the narrow streets of the center and the ancient castle take us back to this era.

What to see in Lierna

The city is rich in historical and scenic attractions and is the perfect destination for a trip out of town with family or friends. Here are the 5 things not to miss if you decide to visit Lierna.

  • Trek along the wayfarer's path: lierna is a stage of the wayfarer's path: an itinerary that runs along the entire Lecco side of the lake for a total of approximately 45 km. If you don't want to cover it all at once, you can choose to skip some stages, thanks to the frequent intersections between the route and the Lecco-Colico railway line.
  • An afternoon at the beach: the village of Lierna is also called "the pearl of the lake" and is famous for its white pebble beach called Riva bianca". The beach is one of the largest on the lake and is ideal for relaxing on a summer afternoon.
  • Historical walk in the city center and visit to the castle: the medieval historic center is undoubtedly worth a visit. Small narrow alleys, shops and charming places are ideal for taking a walk and having an aperitif or ice cream with the family. The heart of the walk is the castle: an ancient Lombard residence with splendid frescoed walls, the bases of a watchtower and the small 400th century church of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.
  • Enter the basilica of S.Ambrogio: the church of Sant'Ambrogio is a small architectural jewel dating back to the 1619th century. How to get to Lierna

The town is about 1 hour's drive from Milan and can be reached via state road 36 on Lake Como.

Lierna joined the service E-VAI Public, a way of traveling that promotes sustainable mobility for citizens and tourists.
