Sustainable mobility is the ideal model in the world of transport that allows the environmental impact of the sector to be reduced to a minimum, maximizing the efficiency, intelligence and speed of travel.

Moving in a sustainable, safe and economical way within urban spaces is one of the challenges that modern society is called upon to face, but it also represents an opportunity to redesign the transport sector through a management model based on sustainable mobility criteria and integrated.

According to the definition of World Business Council for Sustainable Development, sustainable mobility means «give people the opportunity to move freely, communicate and establish relationships without ever losing sight of the human and environmental aspects, today and in the future».

The concept of sustainable mobility can therefore be summarized as the set of all those modes of travel capable of reducing environmental impacts (air and noise pollution), social impacts (road congestion and accidents) and economic impacts (urban degradation, land consumption and cost of transport) generated by vehicles fueled by fossil fuels.

There are different forms of sustainable transport that allow you to move from one point of the city to another in an easy, fast and less polluting way:

  • Pedestrian mobility
  • Public transport
  • Electric or hybrid cars
  • Car sharing
  • Car pool

Sustainable and combined mobility: what intermodal transport means

A particular form of sustainable mobility is intermodal transport, also called combined or multimodal, a constantly growing trend that has its origins in the field of freight transport.

In fact, the word "intermodality" indicates a methodology for transferring goods based on standardized "loading units", generally containers, which can easily be moved from one means of transport to another to reach the final destination.

Among the different definitions of intermodal transport, the most authoritative is the one contained in the document Terminology on combined transport of the European Conference of Transport Ministers (CEMT) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) which describes this transport system as a «movement of goods in the same loading unit or on the same road vehicle, which uses two or more modes of transport, and which does not involve the direct processing of the goods in the transhipment phases».
Intermodality is therefore a form of mobility that is achieved through the combined use of different means of transport with a consequent optimization of travel times and costs.

Intermodal transport represents a valid alternative to the use of private vehicles, it reduces urban traffic and encourages the use of public transport and all those vehicles with low environmental impact such as electric cars, pedal-assisted bicycles and electric scooters.

The synergistic use of multiple means of transport improves the quality of life in the city and turns the spotlight on the evolution of railway stations which will play a key role in the urban mobility system of the future, transforming from places of transit only for passengers and goods into Multi-service sustainable mobility hub.

Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that the digitalisation process is also changing the concept of mobility and, if on the one hand technological innovation favors the development of intermodal, sustainable and intelligent transport networks, on the other hand it makes access to services part of consumers easier and more immediate.

Sustainable and integrated mobility: electric car sharing E-VAI

Building an efficient and safe regional transport network starting from respect for the surrounding environment is the goal of E-VAI, the first electric car sharing in Lombardy that combines shared mobility and sustainable mobility in order to optimize travel within the Region between urban areas and extra-urban areas. Indeed, E-VAI it is the only electric car sharing connected with the three airports of Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio and with the main regional railway hubs.

E-VAI it is the perfect example of intermodality between electric cars and public transport and its fleet is made up exclusively of electric and hybrid cars that allow you to move easily from the city center or the province to the main transit hubs.

Silent, light, easy to drive and above all ecological, the cars of E-VAI, thanks to C02 emissions reduced to a minimum, they have free access to Limited Traffic Zones and Area C and can park in the spaces delimited by blue and yellow lines.
Rent a car E-VAI it's simple: just connect to the official website or download the App available for iOS and Android. There are no registration fees for the service and, once registered, simply identify theE-VAI Point nearest, book your car and pick it up conveniently at the indicated time. The vehicle can then be returned to any of the E-VAI Point present in Lombardy.
E-VAI it is not only sustainable and innovative but also economical and to allow everyone to try the electric driving experience it has thought of a special promotion dedicated to new members: by registering for free for the service the first hour of rental is free until 31 December 2021.

How to take advantage of the promotion? By registering for free for the service on the official website or by downloading the App E-VAI, filling in the fields with the required data and entering the code EVAI2021 in the "Promotional Code" field.
