Sharing economy: sharing and collaboration at the basis of social improvement.

The sharing economy, also known as collaborative economy or sharing economy, is an economic model that completely redesigns social and consumption coordinates.

What is the sharing economy? The prestigious Oxford Dictionary introduced this term only in 2015, defining the sharing economy as “An economic system in which goods or services are shared between individuals, free or for a fee, over the Internet. Thanks to the sharing economy, you can easily rent your car, your apartment, your bicycle or even your Wi-Fi network when you are not using them".

Analyzing this definition, it is clear that the collaborative economy is based on a fundamental principle: it is not ownership that distinguishes a good or service, but rather its actual use. For this reason, the sharing economy is an economic and social model that distances itself from the concepts of purchase and ownership, while approaching the world of sharing and reusing goods and services.

The goal is to achieve economic, environmental and social improvement. In fact, sharing goods and services allows not only to minimize the waste of resources and the related environmental impact, but also to obtain a significant economic return. Furthermore, the sharing economy allows us to achieve greater individual and collective well-being.

What sectors are involved in the transition towards the collaborative economy? In reality, almost all sectors of the modern market come into contact with collaborative economy models: just think of mobility, with car sharing services, car pooling, bike sharing and sharing of innovative micro vehicles such as electric scooters, or even business , with shared coworking work environments and crowdfunding campaigns, aimed at raising funds from potential investors to start a business or carry out a project.

What are the distinctive features of the collaborative economy?

The sharing economy is based on some fundamental principles, which also constitute important objectives to be achieved:

  • Reduction of production and waste of resources and reuse of goods with consequent reduction of environmental impact;
  • Accessibility to all services at a collective level;
  • Reduction of owned assets and increase in shared services;
  • Dissemination of technological platforms, accessible to all, which allow individual and social needs to be satisfied in the shortest possible time;
  • Reduction in the cost of goods and services (no longer owned) with consequent economic return at an individual and social level.

Sharing economy and mobility: the current situation

The transport and mobility sector confirms itself as one of the pioneers in the transition process towards the sharing economy. In fact, the use of sharing mobility services in urban and extra-urban areas is constantly growing, such as car sharing, car pooling, bike sharing and sharing of innovative vehicles such as electric scooters. Sharing the means of transport allows you to limit the massive use of owned vehicles, reducing the number of vehicles in circulation, urban traffic and air pollution.

A further step towards sharing economy and sustainability was taken by E-VAI, the first electric car sharing in Lombardy.
