If you use an electric car to get around, one of the things you need to know is how the charging stations work.
Among the most frequent questions of those who, for the first time, approach the world of electric mobility are those relating to charging stations: how do they work? How many kilometers can you travel with each charge? How long does it take to recharge the car battery?
In this article, we will try to provide some clarity.
Electric car charging station: types
Charging stations for electric cars can be of different types, depending on their intended use. The public ones are installed on the streets and in train stations and are accessible to all. Private ones are installed in private spaces such as company car parks and homes; finally there are the charging stations in private environments open to the public such as shopping centers and supermarkets.
Depending on the intended use, the charging columns for electric cars have a different structure: from the wall-mounted ones, also called wall-boxes and which are installed in garages and underground car parks, up to the pole or column ones, which are installed in streets and public places.
Another feature of charging stations is the voltage.
The smallest systems have a voltage of 3,7 or 7,4 kW, the most powerful, 11 or 22 kW. How to choose which one to use? It really depends on your needs. If we have to travel a few kilometers, it will probably be enough to recharge our electric car with a 3,7 or 7,4 kW column, while if we have to travel many kilometers, we need to refuel from a 22 kW column.
How long does the car take to charge?
Again, a lot depends on the voltage. If the charging station is powered by a power of 22 kW, it takes 2 hours on average, while if the voltage is lower, it can take up to 5 hours for a complete charge.
Where are the public charging stations located?
One of the things that causes the most concern is how to find the charging stations closest to us. There are many applications on the market which, based on the geolocation of the position, indicate the nearest charging station. To date, Lombardy is one of the Italian regions where the diffusion of charging stations for electric cars is widest. There is talk of more than 1.000 charging points throughout the Lombardy region.
