The European Mobility Week 2024, which will take place from 16 to 22 September, is an important opportunity to promote sustainable mobility and encourage citizens and companies to think about the environmental impact of their daily travel. This initiative, launched for the first time in 2002 by the European Commission, aims to raise public awareness of the benefits of a more ecological and responsible approach to travel, encouraging the use of alternative means of transport such as car sharing, public transport, cycling and walking.

The Theme of the European Mobility Week 2024

Every year, the European Mobility Week focuses on a specific theme that reflects current challenges in the field of urban mobility. For 2024, the chosen theme is “Sharing public spaces”, taken from the official claim “Move sustainably… and healthily”. Efficiency and sharing for sustainable mobility are obviously at the heart of the week. This theme highlights the importance of improving transport efficiency and promoting vehicle sharing to reduce environmental impact and improve the quality of life in cities.

Growing urbanization and private traffic have led to an increase in CO2 emissions, worsening air quality and the health of citizens. The main objective of this edition is to show how shared mobility, combined with innovative technologies and sustainable urban planning, can significantly reduce these problems.

European Mobility Week 2024: the guidelines

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security adheres to the European Mobility Week by coordinating and supporting the initiatives and events organized by Municipalities and associations, with the aim of confirming Italy among the countries with the highest number of adhesions at European level. The theme chosen for this year's campaign is "Sharing public spaces" and is based on four main thematic guidelines for intervention:

  • Experience public space differently
  • Let's redevelop the urban space together
  • School Streets: Creating a Safe Space for Active Travel
  • Planning and designing safer roads

Urban surfaces designated for vehicular traffic are effectively spaces taken away from collective use. Moreover, given that over 70% of Europeans live in urban areas, it is even more obvious that public space is scarce in many cities. An environment in which people, means of transport and activities have their own space promotes social equity, increases road safety, reduces air pollution and improves quality of life.

How to participate in the European Mobility Week 2024

There are many ways to actively participate in this initiative, both individually and as a company. Cities that join the initiative organize local events that may include:

  • Car-free days: Roads are closed to private traffic to encourage the use of alternative means of transport.
  • Awareness campaigns: initiatives to inform citizens about the benefits of sustainable mobility and the impact of CO2 emissions.
  • Commuting Plans: Companies are encouraged to promote shared transportation solutions among employees.
  • Workshops and conferences: educational events to discuss the future of urban mobility and new technologies.
